Medicare or Health Insurance

12th July 2023 | SuccessVisa

Welcome to SuccessVisa! In this video, Amit explains what to do when you have both a Medicare card and private health insurance. If you're on a temporary visa and have received an invitation for permanent residency, you must meet the requirements of condition 8501, which involves having health insurance. This insurance can be either private or Medicare.

For student visa holders, having private health insurance is a must, regardless of whether they possess a Medicare card or not. However, for holders of other visas, having a valid Medicare card is sufficient. Additionally, health insurance can be provided by either overseas or Australian companies. For student visa holders, it must be obtained from an Australian provider.

When you apply for a visa to Australia and arrive on a student visa, it's crucial to ensure that your health insurance is active on the day of your arrival. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in breaching condition 8501, which could lead to visa cancellation
